today is world donkey day apparently, so I was going to draw a lil doodle of mira with her donkey right. so I go 2 google it (have not googled her specific donkey type, the woolly páramo donkey, since I made her possibly, in like, ..2014?? usually I just type in baby donkey for refs, lmao)

and ive gone down a rabbit hole.

bear with me.

this is going to be a Long One.

there's almost NOTHING abt the 'woolly paramo donkey' on the internet. there's a blogsite from 2011 saying "Another endangered species of donkey is the Woolly Paramo Donkey. It can be found in high elevations of up to 3,000 m altitude and the permanent snow line of about 5,000 meters. It can be found in Colombia." which, I assume in 2014, when making Mira, I googled 'endangered donkeys' and this popped up. And I did not look further. until now.

if you google that passage, or anything related to páramo woollies, they just. don't seem to EXIST???! there's one page that copy and pastes the above paragraph word for word, but it was published in 2015, so. it also just scrubbed info from the aforementioned blog that seems to be run by a rando with no...sources or expertise at all....fabulous. okay. kept digging.

this page cites the pictured donkey as a woolly páramo donkey, except, that is in Ireland. not anywhere near páramo! (and sure, exporting animals is a Thing, but...the caption says its a subspecies of the paramo donkeys???!) (and, for the record, were going with the wiki's definition of paramo here: "A narrower term classifies the páramo according to its regional placement in the northern Andes of South America and adjacent southern Central America.") so we're looking for donkeys around there. more on that later.

but for now, The ENGLISH wikipedia page for Páramo (region) does not include ANYTHING about donkeys. which. if it was an endangered species, wouldn't it be notable?? however, the image the first blog uses...IS on wikipedia, and is cited. as being taken in 2007, possibly one of the earliest pics of said donkey type, and was in Chimborazo, Ecuador which iS IN THE PARAMO ECOSYSTEM OKAY WE'RE GETTING SOMEWHERE. RIGHT. THERE'S DONKEYS THERE. I knew that from looking up travel iteraries around Columbia's paramo. what I need to know tho is...ARE THEY A SPECIFIC, ENDANGERED SPECIES/SUBSPECIES/ RARE BREED?! ANYTHING???

The guy who's credited with the photo...unless its a case of the same name (which would be a hell of a coincidence, in this case) has scientific papers out about the paramo region! but...I have to request access to them, and most of them are in spanish, and who knows if they mention donkeys at all or the guy just put pics of them on wikipedia to be nice. like, I know donkeys do live there, but it doesn't seem to be a specific species, more like this is 'a woolly donkey of the paramo region' from the translation of the title of the photo. woolly donkeys can be anywhere!

WELL. the wikipedia photo is used on the ITALIAN WIKIPEDIA PAGE FOR PARAMO. and it lacks info which makes me scream. just calling it a 'woolly paramo donkey' and not elaborating is EVIL is it a reg donkey or NOT

looking into woolly donkeys alone, which I KNOW are a thing, this page cites the miniature woolly variation as rare, saying there are only 400-ish in the US. cool, that's a rare breed, if true. different from being an endangered species, though!!! totally different thing!!! and that linked page is from a breeder with no cited sources, and their last news update was...2019.

the smithsonian estimates miniature donkeys in general to at 10,000-20,000, so 400 of those being woolly seems to be..lowballing the amount of woollies? possibly? seems very low...esp for something with high cuteness appeal that would be a hit at fairs, competitions, or petting zoos. but if true thats at least...a rare breed... which is something...

(there are Poitou donkeys, if nothing else, which are confirmed to be a Thing, woolly, and endangered. quite frankly if I was going to change her to any other donkey, this would be it. its not on the red data list, but it is on the FAO endangered list, which is like. close enough yk?)

back to the paramo donkeys specifically. in my desperation, I asked bing's AI to scrub the web for ANYTHING about them. not that AI is always right, but it is Fast. it said "There is no scientific record of a species known as the “Woolly Paramo Donkey” living in high altitudes or near permanent snow." which...yeah. starting to Doubt it's existence. by this point.

just when I thought 'this thang isn't real, oh god I might have to pick a new donkey for Mira.....' I Found it somewhere unexpected.

a blog post about farmville 2. yeah the old facebook game! why is it here???! the game came out in 2012, so it had to be pulling the name from an earlier source, and was not where the blogs were getting their info (and thank god for that) but...even looking into reputable sources for THAT is hard to find??! its not on the farmville 2 wiki (LMAO) there's other species of donkey on the game, but none matching these low res pics that pop up on random cheatcode blogs when I look for possible sources?

both of these images/img descriptions call it the woolly paramo donkey. and seem to be reasonably well rendered, and can be found across a few other farmville 2 blogs/guides... (the first img being a baby, the scond being adult vers) I can't really imagine boomers who play farmville going to the effort to photoshop fake upgrades in 2012 for farmville 2... but its not on the fan wiki, which usually cite their sources. I am not playing farmville 2 to investigate this further, but its WEIRD!!! esp since farmville does have woolly donkeys, and the above are NOT just colorovers of them! where...where was farmville drawing the "woolly paramo donkey" name from.

anyway, enough about farmville it really isnt THAT important but it blows my mind the name woolly paramo donkey slipped into there somehow. how. who. & its supposedly in a game called 'island paradise' but I couldn't find pictures of it. but its got its own wiki fan page as well...??

so, anyway, back to the actual research, here's a map of where the paramo ecosystem is. and a map from 2018 on a reputable government website regarding donkey populations. (most recent study I could find, unfortunately!) there could very well be an endangered or at least rare subspecies/breed of donkey around there! (by the way, there ARE woolly MONKEYS around the area. surely no one with dyslexia like me read monkeys as donkeys and ran with it right. RIGHT.)

but...there's not one listed under the red data list's website under the name paramo or even any woollies. tbf, the red data website is moreso for wild animals, rather than rare domestic breeds). so I thought hm. okay. time to try something else. I checked for endangered south american donkeys in general. narrowed it down by possible countries. I checked every search engine I have bookmarked, including one that searches for scientific articles/books exclusively. I checked the dang wikipedia list of donkeys. (which, by the way? severely lacking info in general)

NOTHING. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE WOOLLY PARAMO DONKEY BREED, EXCEPT CITED ON THOSE RANDOM BLOGS, AND THAT SINGLE WIKIPEDIA PHOTO. unless...the region it would be in would be spanish-speaking.... there MIGHT be websites on it that I can't even read or find because I'm not using the right terms...OOF. I tried a few words for donkey (burro, burra, burrico,) paired with paramo, and I just kept getting a book result. Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo. not related at all, sadly, just includes a donkey in the story and the word paramo in the title.

I guess u could say the woolly paramo donkey was just a mirage? :) (loud booing)

anyway, all of this to say, the breed is most likely not real, or if they are, not documented online. from what I can tell, it seems to just be that woolly donkeys in general are rare, and while they do live in that area, are not proper endangered animals/species if we want to get hung up on semantics. but I'm not changing it for the comic. having her be a (possibly) fake donkey breed is objectively kind of funny, and it was already mentioned in chapter 1!

unless shirogane has decoy DNAs in the event of a break in and that was one of them. oops, all placebo. her mew power comes from, like, the power of belief or whatever. joke joke joke this is not lore its a joke

hey! i remember being on tumblr in the old days (old-ish, like 2014-2017) and asks were sooo common and so fun to just get to know people. i'm glad you're doing this, and i love to get asks!

about me and my job: i'm a researcher currently employed in a government lab where i work with common viruses like HSV and influenza in order to understand how they affect people with specific genetic diseases. microbiology (and biology in general) is one of my greatest passions and i LOVE geeking out about it. seriously don't get me started lol or please do actually. let's talk about it

fandoms: i'm kind of all over the place here. i love so much media but my biggest fandoms as you can tell from my blog are probably lotr/the hobbit, wwdits, btvs, hunter x hunter, the x files, and merlin. i also LOVE severance; it's such a great show but i'm not sure if there's even a fandom for it?? and i'm no hardcore shipper, but i like bagginshield, samfro, methur, nandermo (frankly any ship on the show), destiel because i'm still living in 2016, aziraphale/crowley, and mulder/scully. tbh there are probably so many more

writing/blog: i do love to write, yet i've never published any fics online before. BUT i've got a few fics in the works which i want to try to post soon -- my ao3 is the same as my tumblr although there's nothing on there yet except my treasured bookmarks lol. i'd like to get prompts or story snippet ideas, but sometimes i can be such a slow writer that i might struggle to respond to them. but who knows! maybe it'll bring out some inspiration in me.

pets/hobbies: i don't have any pets right now, and my hobbies usually involve playing and listening to music, writing, reading, making and collecting jewelry, and cooking.

• I’m 20 years old in this body, and my birthday is on the 25th of May.

• I’m a straight cis female, so she / her pronouns would do just fine.

• I’ve been awakened since about 2014 ish, and I’m a spiritual Therian, Otherkin, Alterhuman, Nonhuman, Fictionfolk / Fictionkin, however you wanna call it 😂 Meaning I believe all if not most of my identities / kintypes are rooted from alternate lives, such as: Past, Future, Parallel, and Dream lives. Art tips

that I posted to my discord server, but decided to share here for anybody who might want or need them.

I’ve been drawing since the middle/near end of 2014 and while most of it was ugly MLP stuff, I’ve definitely improved a lot since then.

I don’t have a lot of my old art anymore, but if I can find my sketchbook from my high school art class (around 2019-ish) then I’ll update this post with pictures of some of the doodles tomorrow.

I’ll probably add on to this list eventually but for now I am really tired so,, whoopsies

Anyway, on to the tips!

Even if you think it’s ugly, DRAW !! That’s the only way you’ll improve. Draw what you might think looks horrible, only to come back to it later and see what you want to change or what might need to be changed. This helps you understand what parts of your styles and/or techniques you might want to change/use/stylize/etc.

Just go crazy. Slap colors on a random doodle. Eventually you’ll either come up with a new character or inspiration for one. Use flowers, gemstones, other parts of nature, etc. as reference. I actually fell victim to this and now quite a few of my OCs are flower themed 💀

Make use of your sketchbook. Find some snazzy ways to make it stand out. If you want to make a collage of nothing but magazine clippings or your favorite characters? Go ahead. Your sketchbook is supposed to be personalized to YOUR liking. It’s like a home you can always come back to

Doodle in pen when you want to step out of your comfort zone,, oh my goodness I can’t explain how good this feels. ESPECIALLY colored ink with highlighters. It also trains you to learn how to draw without erasing mistakes, teaching you to learn to accept those mistakes as you go on. Most of my sketchbook doodles throughout the years have always been in pen and it’s my favorite medium 100%

Who cares if your paper is ripping from highlighters or countless layers of markers? Find a way to make use of that ripping and warping of the paper. Cut out a shape in that area that shows part of a doodle on the next page, sort of like a little window. Have fun with it! Your work doesn’t need to be or look professional. It’s all about having fun as you go

If there’s art supplies you never use that collect dust then start using them. I guarantee they’ll come in handy eventually + when used right they can definitely make your sketches and doodles stand out. I am a victim of this as well.. we don’t talk about my um decade old stash of sharpies 😕

today's 45 min figure study thing. i followed through with what i said i was gonna do yesterday and tried to be less anal about gridding it up (though i did grid). got my lines down in what was apparently 7-ish mins which meant i had a whole half hour to Get Painty With It (yay). couldnt quite take full advantage of it tho because my sleep schedule is super hecked up and i kept dozing off mid-painting, losing track of which part i was in the process of working on. ah, reminds me of being in college again...

working on stuff while sleep deprived is a complete waste of time, by the way-- you will make so many mistakes, and constantly trying to fix them will set you back so much that in 70% of situations you'll be better off investing in a nap and then trying to manage with the time you have left after. seriously. that is just how the math works out. you waste time making a mistake and you waste extra time fixing it. its like a double time loss with zero net progress. no good!

anyway, under the cut is another timelapse. yeehaw

comparing it with the ref photo after the fact, i got pretty dang close with my proportions right out the gate. the things that are slightly off: the face should be nudged forward, the bent elbow pulled up, and the feet pulled down. but otherwise, very much "good enough"! i dunno if this pose was just an easy one or if im just getting the hang of things. maybe on thursday we'll end up doing some sort of crazy foreshortened crumpled up pose that'll make me regret being an artist, though. lol

i really like how the knees area turned out-- its also the spot i did the absolute least work in. i kept blacking out while working on the torso/stomach and having to salvage whatever mess i made while making blind marks. looking at a shadow shape and wondering "what on earth is this supposed to be relative to the reference?"

its not that extreme here but man, back in college i'd go to my figure drawing class after pulling an all nighter and it'd be a real struggle. just producing some real postmodern abstract "figures" while falling unconscious and trying to deduce afterwards if this weird line i made was supposed to represent an arm or what. not very healthy but its still a little funny to me. oh! i actually have an example of this on my blog here, even. here is a post from 2014. lol. the inner workings of the mind

1) What was your first exposure to Danganronpa?

There's a few different answers to this depending on the level of awareness I had on what DR was. In like 2014-ish I had a friend cosplay as Monokuma, but had literally no idea what DR was at that point despite them enthusiastically recommending it to me. A few years later, another friend cosplayed as Chiaki, equally clueless then. It wasn't until like lockdown that I saw a play through of DR1 come up in my recommended on YouTube and I was just like "I vibe with detective games right now, sure" and then I experienced The Horrors (cautiously affectionate). Though I did vaguely recall Hifumi's death when I saw it for the first time, definitely hadn't seen the whole game before.

6) Do you have a fan character? Tell us about them!

I somehow don't have a DR fan character yet! Mainly because my brain took a different route and just started throwing my own characters into a slightly modified DR-like scenario as a game design challenge for myself. More focused on changing parts of the killing game formula and stuff. :p

7) You get the chance to reassign five characters new talents. Who do you choose, and which new talents do they get?

Gonna do this with the angle of characters keeping their underlying personality, and force myself to choose at least one per game. Leon is now the Ultimate Stage Actor, and yes he still wants to be a rock star - dude never learns his lines, just improvs flawlessly. Taka is now the Ultimate Lawyer, and my boy does NOT cope with the changed rules of killing game trial mayhem, repeatedly explaining that you can't just do the death penalty like that and Monokuma telling him to stop being a spoilsport. Hiyoko is now the Ultimate Opera Singer, partially because it makes it ten times funnier that she likes Ibuki's screamo, and because I find it very funny the idea of her absolutely dragging someone through the mud with words while singing Like That. Gundham Tanaka is now the Ultimate Janitor. No further comment, imagine what you will. Finally, I'm gonna say that Shuichi is now the Ultimate Marksman. He retains a literal eye for detail, the insecurity from rooty-tooty-thing-go-shooty thing going wrong, and a better background for the trial text going as absolutely buckwild as it does while the player still handles it, as well as better meta for not participating in the fundamental trial stuff near the end. You're asking the Ultimate Marksman to not take any shot.

Not all of those are amazing choices but it is 6am and I'm writing this because I can't sleep lmao

20) What is your favorite aspect of Danganronpa?

For as flawed as they are, the characters are what I latched on to and made me keep playing. Don't have much more to say without going on essay-length rants about individual character analyses right now though. But the characters are definitely a big draw.

27) You’re placed in a Killing Game as yourself (who you are now, no perks). How far do you believe you’d get?

Bestie, I am fucked. I am exceedingly killable and the embodiment of the Barely Hanging In There Star. I'd be paranoid, self-isolate as much as possible, and that would give anyone that figures out where I go an easy place to kill me with no witnesses. If I don't die first, I'm either a dishonourable second, or the least memorable of the two chapter three victims (because I'm assuming the others are still Ultimates, so I'm literally Just Some Guy) that the writers just get rid of because I outlived whatever subplot significance I had.

39) Which character do you feel deserves more love?

This is a hard one to answer simply from the fact I'm very much in my own bubble and don't really know the fandom's most beloved blorbos. Gonna do a few different ones for different interpretations of the question. Korekiyo was done dirty by the writing and could've been an interesting character but instead just feels like a waste of a good motive, so he deserved more love by the DR writers. Leon seems very ignored because first killer, obvious killer once the investigation started and his literal name was at the scene, and relatively shallow what we got in just the original game. So he could probably do with more attention to expand on his character. And I just don't want the TERFs to have Tenko, so I'm gonna say Tenko. Tenko would aggressively support trans rights, you can't change my mind. Deserves more love from non-TERFs.

46) What are some of your pregame headcanons?

I'm going to assume this is mainly about the V3 crew and answer based on that. And because I'm not creative, one pre-game headcanon per character.

Rantaro was a hell of a homebody, but got very good at cooking, and enjoyed trying to create foods from different cultures as accurately as possible. Danganronpa had a hell of a time getting ahold of him for the 52nd game.

Kaede was actually incredibly good at maths. Never saw herself as the creative type because of it.

Ryoma was actually a relatively happy-go-lucky guy, before the Character Writing made him depressed. He was a very good singer, too.

Kirumi was one of the popular kids, but like... the Secondary Character of the main popular kids friends group. She let you copy off her homework because she was equally as confident when she was completely wrong as when she was right.

Angie regularly ran DnD campaigns for a small group of people. She was the glue holding the friend group together, and the one who stopped them drifting apart.

Tenko was studying psychology in her free time in a desperate attempt to try and find a way to outwit her ADHD. Mainly she just ended up going down Wikipedia rabbit holes. Very good on the clarinet.

Korekiyo was just a normal guy. Didn't have a sister. Healthy relationship with his existing family. He had a pet dog that he hung out with a lot after school. He never brushed his hair.

Miu was actually a completely average student, the kind of person you'd never happen to really meet unless someone introduced you. But by God she was passionate about writing. Not that she ever told anyone.

Gonta was very much a gym bro. Neglected a lot of his studies to get back on the grind, but was still quite naturally smart. He paid no mind to people wondering how a teenager like him was jacked as fuck.

Kokichi was very much your archetypical emo kid. Got very good at pretending everything was fine for the sake of not getting bothered by people, and tried to blend into the background. He wanted to hack the school website for fun but couldn't be bothered to figure it out.

Kaito was the guy to go to if you needed to pretend you had a boyfriend for an event. He'd do it for a day's lunch money. Solid C+ student in everything but art, where he was a B+ student.

Keebo, I have always imagined as a regular guy who was augmented into a cyborg masquerading as a robot. Aka, not actually even a robot, but Danganronpa fucked him up big time for their purposes. He was a very sporty kid, but didn't like people drawing attention to it. He just had a lot of energy.

Tsumugi... I find it hard to do a headcanon for her because I can't even agree with myself whether she's actually a teenager or an adult cosplaying as one. But she had a small close knit group of friends that she'd spend at least one weekend a month with.

Maki was really looking forward to studying literature in her higher education. But then someone made her apply to Danganronpa on a dare, and she did it to shut them up, intentionally making herself sound as boring as possible to reduce the chance she got picked. Unfortunately, Team Danganronpa took it as a challenge.

Himiko was the one who you'd hear about doing some wild shit, but then you'd meet her in person and the vibe can only be described as the gif of SpongeBob sitting in a coffee shop looking sad. You could never be sure if the things you heard were rumours or true.

Shuichi was the disruptive one with anger issues. He'd aggressively disagree with the teacher's opinion just because he could and he was bored. The only exception was in Geography. It was the one subject that for some reason calmed him down.

Colors in digital settings (despite using PS for digital drawing since 2014-ish) is always confusing to me. Moreover with screen display problem that always managed to mess with the drawing. Eventually I gave up and stick to traditional medias, since I feel I have more control with them. If I have to draw digitally, I usually colorpick directly from reference.

And today, I discover a solution for my problem. And tbh I feel like a genius right now.🤪🤪

Just watched Josie Long’s 2014 show, Cara Josephine, and fucking hell. That is by far the best stand-up show I’ve seen this year, though to be fair it’s January second. Seriously though, that is the best stand-up comedy show I’ve seen in a long time (clarifying “seen” because that leaves out the audio-only Daniel Kitson stuff I was going on about earlier this week, but honestly this is right up there with that as well), which is saying something because I’ve been watching quite a few of those lately. Recency bias is too strong right now for me to say this objectively, but if I were to rank my favourites of all the stand-up shows I’ve ever seen, this one is up there.

Putting the rest behind a cut because I suspect it will get long-ish and rambly.

There’s this thing Josie Long is so good at doing, where she takes some dark subject matter but makes it feel uplifting and hopeful. And she doesn’t do it by minimizing that – she’ll get really into the darkness first, can vividly describe how bad it is and how it feels to face something so difficult, but then manages to find whatever scraps of beauty are in there and draw them out a little at a time. So you barely even realize that she’s bringing the dark material back to something brighter, until it’s already there and she’s tricked you into feeling hopeful about something. I’ve heard her do that in several of her other shows – to some extent, in all the other shows I’ve seen or heard from her – but I think she did it best in this one. I’ve liked all her stuff but this one might be best. She did it very, very well.

It's a bit surprising, because I love her political material, and this isn’t her most political show. It had some politics in it, but was mainly personal stuff. The personal stuff was just so good that I didn’t even wish she’d get back to the calls for socialist revolution (I mean, I’m glad she got back to that at some point, I just mean I went into the show expecting that, and didn’t even mind when it didn’t happen because what did happen was so very good).

It’s a breakup show, and breakup shows aren’t normally my favourite thing, though to be fair I did just go through my first breakup in ten years and that has me a bit more open to connecting with sort of thing (also there are always exceptions, which I feel the need to mention because The Darkness of Robins was one of the best stand-up shows I watched last year). But it’s not just a breakup show! It seemed like just a breakup show, as she was going into it, but then she brought us along through all these other things and by the end I felt (feel) like I just watched a show about family and resilience and people taking care of each other and not to be too cheesy (I mean, I guess it’s a bit late to say that in this post) but how to find hope when it��s really difficult.

And obviously, even though there was only a very small amount of explicitly political material, everything in Josie Long’s worldview and approaches to the subjects she covered are informed by her politics. Is that anything? Any chance the fact that my politics align with hers make me more likely to connect to her personal material as well, because I share the worldview that informs the way we see life on a smaller scale as well? Probably not, that’s probably nothing. I am still emotionally reeling from how good that show was right now, and probably writing stuff about it that won’t even make sense to me when I look back later. Like the post I made last week right after hearing the Daniel Kitson CD when I said I think he might have implicitly lied to us about the voice actor.

Here's something I think. Earlier last year, when I was first listening to Daniel Kitson’s stuff, in some of those early shows he complained a fair bit about people he disliked coming to his shows. I listened to that and didn’t understand it. I thought: “Who the hell is going to a Daniel Kitson show while being a shitty person?” Not just because I don’t think those people should be there, but because I don’t see why they would be. This is beautiful sensitive introspective material that surely would be of interest only to people who also go through life with care and compassion for their fellow human beings.

A few months ago now, while scouring the internet for comedy recordings, I came across archives of Daniel Kitson fans from 2006-2007-ish. I was shocked to find it validated everything Kitson said about his audience containing a lot of – to use his word – cunts. The cunts were only a few people 15+ years ago, and many other bits of that website are actually very cool. I’m feeling the need to clarify that because when I first found it, I wrote a post on here that pretty thoughtlessly called them all terrible people, and good experiences I’ve had since then make me feel bad about painting with such a broad brush. But these few particular Daniel Kitson fans, who were vocal at that particular time years ago, did make me understand that apparently, shitty people can like this stuff too.

I guess I could take that as a way to understand that even people who act in ways that I’d label as being shitty can also connect to introspective insightful material, because they also have rich and complex inner lives and personal approaches to the world that could even overlap with mine in some ways. I could try to understand them better based on that. But I don’t really want to.

The main thing that made me decide I hate those people is they could barely stay on topic in the Daniel Kitson thread without straying into discussions of that [insert various misogynistic descriptions here] Josie Long. Yes, it would have been technically possible in 2007 to dislike one of the only then-successful female comedians for non-sexist reasons, but based on the language they used, I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the case. When you dislike a comedian for non-sexist reasons, you can usually get through a page in a thread about a different comedian without calling her some quite female-specific insults. So you’ll understand if I don’t really want to spend too much time considering whether actually a shared love of Kitson’s material means I have more in common with those people than I’d initially assume.

Anyway. This was a long tangent to say, here’s something I think: I’ve revised my earlier opinion but it’s about Josie Long now. Apparently, it is in fact possible to enjoy Daniel Kitson’s work while being an asshole. But I think anyone who likes Josie Long’s work has to be, at minimum, a decent person. I’m going with a pretty low bar for “decent person” there – just a basic level of human compassion and not being an overt bigot. A person who would not stand outside my house with a sign declaring their right to kill everyone’s grandmother during a pandemic. That sort of thing. Maybe they could still suck in other ways, but liking Josie Long has to be at least a sign that someone has met the bare minimum standard for decency. I can’t see how she would appeal to anyone who doesn’t.

That doesn’t mean that anyone who dislikes Josie Long’s work can’t be a good person. Maybe it’s just not their thing. Maybe they don’t like being taken on a journey to the depth of emotional responses to the complex human experience, an enlightening challenge to the limits of a soul’s capacity for hope. It’s fine, bad taste in comedy is not technically a moral character flaw. I’m just saying if someone does like Josie Long, I don’t see how that could be compatible with the sort of traits that will make me really hate someone. And I will continue to believe that until I find the corner of the internet where people gather to talk about how much they love Josie Long and also how racist they are. Maybe that’s out there.

It was also funny. I often feel the need to stop and emphasize that when I’m writing about a comedy show that had a strong personal or political component, if I focus on that too much. Because I know the internet is full of people saying those shows just have all this other stuff but no jokes! So I try to avoid writing a post about the other stuff without clarifying that the other stuff is what hit me and made me want to write the post, but there were also jokes there. I laughed quite a bit throughout the show, it’s more than possible to have all of that.

Now that I think about it, I’ve never felt the need to clarify that in a post about a Daniel Kitson show. Just in a post about Hannah Gadsby, or Josie Long, or Nish Kumar - you know, the comedians who frequently get accused of delivering personal or political messages instead of being funny. Even though Daniel Kitson’s stuff is full of personal and sometimes political messages, but I’ve never seen anyone struggle to understand that he can do that and still be funny. If we think about it long enough, we might be able to spot something that makes him different from a Nish Kumar, a Josie Long, a Hannah Gadsby, that could account for this reaction. I've never heard anyone say it about James Acaster either.

The point is that several times, Cara Josephine made me laugh so hard that I worried for a moment I might have woken up my parents (because I have still not gone back to my place after Christmas). Also, sorry I keep comparing things to Daniel Kitson. He’s been a bit ubiquitous in what I’ve listened to for the last few weeks so my mind keeps bringing things back to that, but this Josie Long show I just heard was so amazing that it probably deserves to be the entire focus of a reaction to it, more than it was in this post. Sorry about that.

I've hyperfixated on two bands(more than that in my 24 years of course, but these are the examples I'll be using). Conquer Divide, and Black Veil Brides. Here's what they looked like.

Conquer Divide: I heard a song from them in 2017: Eyes Wide Shut. I like their style. I know the names and faces, I know the style, but I don't really know their story much. All I know is they're an all girls metalcore band that used to have a different screamer until 2014 and replaced their drummer during a hiatus that lasted between 2016 and 2019. They have 1 studio album and a few singles.

Black Veil Brides: I found them in 2015: Unsurprisingly, it was the Knives and Pens video. Since then, I've seen a shit ton of interviews, and my own songwriting most often draws inspiration from Andy's lyrics. This is literally the band that got me to start paying attention to lyrics. I got into them around 2016, while they were on hiatus (coincidence? lol) that lasted between 2014 and 2017-ish. I know that Andy's grandfather passed away, I know he was bullied in school for not conforming to christian beliefs, that he never graduated high school, he had a youtube channel back in the day before black veil started to take off, The inspiration for Knives and Pens (choice to create or destroy) the inspiration for The Mortician's Daughter(childhood crush in middle school, that feeling died out a while before the remake, where he gave the song to Jinxx to make something new out of it.) I know that the song We Stitch These Wounds had a completely different instrumental and vocal melody before Andy decided to put his lyrics on top of a track that Jake and Jinxx already made, I know the story of F.E.A.R. and the Wild Ones to an extent, I know the story of The Phantom Tomorrow, I watched American Satan and Paradise City, I watched a video of him trying to punch a guy who was heckling him at a show, I found out that the band's current bassist watched it happen from 10 feet away, 7 years before he joined, and I know that Ashley was making shit hard for everyone right up until the point where he was replaced with Lonny. They have 5 studio albums and an EP, along with an early demo that, officially, is unavailable for streaming or purchase.

Guess which band I spent more time on in my life. The answer will surprise you.

This is random but I absolutely hate how people assume that having something as a special interest (or hyperfixation) means that you have extensive in-depth knowledge about it. Especially since it’s mostly neurotypical people guilty of this (though I’ve seen plenty of nd do it as well.) We’ve been told an annoying amount of times that “you don’t actually have a special interest in x, you hardly know anything about it” by people who have a lot of background in the subject. Like no where in any description of a special interest does it say it makes you an expert in the subject. Some people only fixate on the idea or aesthetic of their special interest. Some only on a surface level knowledge of it. Some people just simply aren’t compelled to dig deeper. I’ve never had the urge to look much into learning more about most of my spins, and when I’ve forced myself to I end up bored and don’t pay attention to whatever I’m researching.

I just need people to understand that having a spin doesn’t require substantial knowledge in the area to be valid. We just want to casually talk about what we already know and maybe learn little tidbits from others without being told “educate yourself” or that we’re invalid.

(this got quite long, so my thoughts after the post break)

now, when we talk those two's dynamic, we gotta start from what i consider 'the beginning'. so, 2014 up to 2017-ish. back then? their energy was absolutely more romantic and their interactions were heavily based on flirting. now, was this just their organic chemistry shining through or was this played up for audiences to eat up?? nobody knows. hell! i dont think they know. these are the years and the interactions that i consider key to everything else that follows, it influences everything.

then, we have 2018. what happened in this time, i think, is partly responsible for their relationship changing and becoming what is it right now. this is when they realized, by no easy means, just how much they meant to each other and how deep their emotions ran. after that, their energy leveled out and their interactions softened out. as a defense mechanism for self-preservation of their own emotions? as a way to protect their extremely important friendship and their working relationship? i think a mixture of all of those. i dont think the energy that i mentioned is gone, i just think it gets channeled a lot more tamely now that they're in a more mature spot of their lives. (if you dont know what happened back in 2018, i wont try to explain in clumsy words, ill just redirect you to the source. i recommend trixie's documentary 'moving parts' as well as these podcasts x, x, x, x, x,)

now, we have 2019 up until now. i think this is where their 'platonic' era begins. it certainly can be seen that way, and they definitely want everyone to see it that way, e.g 'we're casual friends' 'we're business partners' (shoutout to trixie). BUT, i believe this is outweighed by the intimacy and closeness that they show in literally all aspects of their life. do i think they're romantically involved now? no. do i think the romantic undertones that they used to have has tinted their energy up until now? absolutely.

of course, this is just my opinion. if you want to draw your own conclusions, do it in a safely manner (so dont do it somewhere that t&k could see, like twt, cause thats not cool)

the linda fairbairn timeline!

went rooting through some of my old papers from the past year and found my timeline from when I went through and devised a backstory for Linda Fairbairn, so i thought I'd put it up here just so those interested could have a look into how i think Linda's story went before Newcastle (and what she might have done afterward.)

mild spoilers for Zurich, some assumptions extrapolated from the timeline, and lastly, some conjectures from lucy @sircarolyn.

1978: Born to then-First Officer and Mrs. Fairbairn in Glasgow, their only child.

1982: First Officer Fairbairn takes 4-year-old Linda to see the last few stages of the Lombard RAC Rally, which has its finish line in York. Linda will cite this as the inception of her passion for rallying. (I also happened to draw this moment.)

1986: Group B era of rallying ends; Linda is 8. She loses interest in rallying at this point, much to the relief of her mother. (However, she does gain an interest in aviation. Much to the dismay of her mother.)

1994-ish: Linda takes her first flight at 16 in a little Cessna her father borrowed from the local aviation club.

1996: Linda begins pilot training at 18.

1999: The earliest at which Linda could conceivably have obtained her (frozen) ATPL, at the age of 21—in Newcastle, which happens in 2011, Linda says she's been a pilot "12 years."

Also in 1999: Linda and her father attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where she witnesses Michèle Mouton attempt the hillclimb in an Audi quattro, which inspires her to take up rallying (depicted here.)

1999 - 2003: Gap period, in which Linda obtains hours through various small jobs in light aircraft to prepare for application to an airline. In this period, she also starts navigating in amateur rallies before moving to driving.

2000 or thereabouts: Douglas gets sacked from Air England.

2003 - 2004: Linda and Herc join Caledonian. Linda is about 25 years old at this point, and has accumulated about 500 hours in the air. They start working together around this time, and Herc takes a liking to her, even teaching her how to work the assignment system so they can fly together often.

2006: Linda reaches 1500 hours, and her fATPL unfreezes, which enables her to apply as a captain at this point (she doesn't; Herc, who was accepted as a junior captain, gets a captain upgrade at some point)

Between 2006 and 2011: Linda is promoted to Senior First Officer, and Herc gets another captain upgrade. Probably not accurate but who cares.

2011: The events of Newcastle. Linda is 33 years old. (Sidenote: I think Martin is 32 [he says in Helsinki.] EDIT: martin’s 34 🙈 i computed wrong and didn’t look ahead. thanks for the tip anon!)

2013: The events of Zürich. Caledonian is absorbed into Swiss Air, and Linda moves to Switzerland. She is 35 years old, and at this point a captain, a rank that she keeps in the transfer. (I have a WIP about how this happens.)

2014 - 2015: Linda starts flying long-haul (36/37 years old).

Early 2015: The events of the Therlinda fic. The Rome chapter has to take place in mid-March, because the weather needs to be right. This also means Bobsled would have broken up in 2014. Sorry.

Some plane-related notes (take with a grain of salt):

At Caledonian, Linda and Herc fly the A320 (exit limit 195/190, range ≈ 6100 km) or A319 (exit limit 160, range ≈ 6900 km).

Linda and Herc both hold A320 type ratings. I want to say Air England had an Airbus short-range fleet and a Boeing long-range fleet, so Herc probably held a Boeing type rating at some point. I haven't thought about whether Douglas and Herc actually flew the B747, but it's a nice thought. Hold the thought about Herc flying Boeing for like. four sentences

I envision Swiss Air to have a mostly, if not all Boeing fleet. Linda has to acquire a B737 type rating for the move to Switzerland, and then, since my favorite thing is expanding Swiss Air's long-range fleet, a B777 or B787 rating. Switching from Airbus to Boeing isn't easy. The two manufacturers have vastly different design philosophies; pilots find it challenging to jump. Herc having Boeing experience in the past certainly gets my brain worms wiggling.

Ayo what are ur official Mungo and Rumple designs? I know you don’t draw them identical so I’m curious 👁👁

!! I have a couple different ones for Jerrie, and Teazer is like… ever-changing at this point. I think I draw her different basically everytime I try. Either I draw them as though it’s US Tour 4 (or 1998 if I really cannot be arsed) or I use my own designs.

My Jerrie is based on US Tour 4 elements as well as La Mirada 2014 - ESPECIALLY in terms of the face and wig shape.

La Mirada Rumpleteazer is also a big go-to for me when I’m trying to think of designs for her, but I’m still a bit stuck when it comes to Teazer’s design that I don’t wanna say I have an official one.

Under the cut for just a list of what my Jerrie’s design consists of:

full black body with slight fur thinning around his tummy

orange face with a yellow muzzle and forehead, and a pink nose!!

hair that covers the eyes (but when they aren’t covered, he has a light orange upper eyelid and green/blue irises on yellow scleras)

Black hair aside from a tuft of orange on the right side, and a tuft of pinkish-red on the left.

His shoulder fur is fluffier, and it tends to meet with the fur on the back of his head to sorta look a bit mullet-ish? But if he sits up straight it’s obviously not the same segment of fur

Sharp black ears with fringing on the tips

Red collar with outer banding, and with silver/gold spikes and a buckle - and a golden trout tag (always a trout). Sometimes I simplify it to a Darwin Fish shape, but it’s supposed to be a trout.

Crop top that is usually plain orange, but can also have stripes or rips that let his shoulder fur pop through

Orange fingers that are either on fingerless-gloved paws or on black, fluffy paws

Orange feet with black toes

A slim, black tail with four spikes of fur coming out of it at the end.

Depending on the effort level, sometimes he can have stripes or different patterns on his coat

There are still things I’m working on wanting to include but haven’t figured out how to do it yet including:

A more consistent usage of freckles

One red hindpaw

The left arm to have less fluff/not have an arm warmer (I usually don’t draw him with any arm warmers so this one always catches me out)

More consistent patterns and striping - I just get so lazy u have to forgive me 😔

And Rumpleteazer is a WHOLE NOTHER can of worms that I really can’t open right now because I get stuck on her every single time I draw her. It’s so frustrating 😭😭, but I’ll figure out something that matches Jerrie sooner or later. My issue is that I’ve gone and made him look nothing like the other cats, so it’s tricky making other designs that accommodate that same art direction.

Obvi ive drawn him a lot so if you name-search him on my blog I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for - plus I’ve drawn him with Rumpleteazer a few times so you might be able to find where I was trying to some up with different ideas for her amongst the Jerrie stuff.

TMNT 2014 design critique

Someone asked me to look at the TMNT 2014 movie designs, and since I'm finally done moving to my new place, I have time to tackle this in detail now haha. Sorry for the disappearance there.

Disclaimer: I know very very little about TMNT and I have never actually watched this movie. Now let's look at the design of these turtles.

In still shots like this, they certainly are not the most terrible designs I have ever seen, but I still don't like them for a number of reasons. Reason number one is how they take cartoon characters and just make them a mess of realistic textures. (with a lot of added muscle.) Like the heads. not much has been done to alter the actual head shape from the weird dumpling shape they have in their basic cartoon forms, their belly shells are intentionally shaped like pectorals and abs, and their back shells look like weird backpacks. In cartoon form, this is fine. In a realistic cgi, with all the extra muscle and mottled skin textures and over-humanized non-human features, and the messy clothing/accessories, it just looks bad. Here is a close up of their faces:

I have noticed as I looked at screenshots, that their face shapes change by angle in some odd ways. Sometimes they look more turtle-ish, like the full side profile on Donatello's face here making him look a bit more like a sea turtle. But other times they look awkwardly human, with more prominent nose shapes, and in particular here we can see some very very human lips and teeth on Michelangelo. I'm white, so take this with a grain of salt, but something about the way their lips have been done often makes them look a bit like caricatures of black people?? That seems questionable at the very least? I haven't watched the movie, so I have no idea if it's just an unfortunate visual coincidence or if they all get black-coded throughout the movie. Not a great choice there, I think. I can't comment much about it though, since I am unaware of the full context.

What I am fairly certain of, is that I've read other posts saying that the origin story of these turtle dudes is that they were just normal turtles who got mutated into humanoids, right? Not humans that got turned into turtle creatures? And I know the cartoon versions have vaguely humanoid teeth, but in a realistic live action I think you should go more into the real animal design. Turtles and tortoises do not have teeth! They have beak-like mouths. And their shells are not so divided, they close up along the sides rather than being open-sided like these designs have it. I know you have to make a lot of anatomical compromises turning turtles into active bipedal humanoids with ninja skills, and that they were trying to stay somewhat accurate to the cartoon designs. But I do think they could have done better and leaned more into real turtle forms instead of awkwardly proportioned humanoid turtle people with body builder muscles and dumpling heads and uncanny lips. So here is a comparison between the movie designs and a real turtle, as well as my personal redesign:

Maybe still not a perfect design for realistic cgi, but I'm not a 3d cgi artist and none of the movie images I could find would lend themselves well to an easy edit. Still, I hope my design would be able to avoid the uncanny valley if it were translated into cgi haha. I think people should just stop trying to make very cartoony designs into live action, it does tend to land face-first in the uncanny valley and that's not great. It could be done intentionally I think, but using the uncanny valley on purpose for your heroic protagonists seems like a weird choice.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on that. Now I'll go finish the creature designs for my profile picture change and find some other projects to start haha.

The Women of Euphoria and Personal Style: Lookbook no.8

Hi to anyone reading,

I hope you’re well considering everything going on! It feels weird to want to talk about fashion or TV shows or red carpets or whatever when 90% of my Google searches are COVID-19 related but there you go. It’s all about trying to power through as normal (minus the social interaction) and pretend the world isn’t ending, right? Queue nervous laughter.

And as if things aren't shitty enough, production of season 2 of Euphoria has been postponed until further notice. 

Okay, in the grand scheme of things, having to wait a bit longer for a TV show isn’t catastrophic but it does just about sum up the transition from 2019 to 2020 thus far that after HBO redeemed itself by broadcasting Euphoria in the summer following an ending to Game of Thrones that has made the whole series unrewatchable, the glimmer of hope in me reignited by the prospect of series 2 this year has been quickly dashed. 2021, I’m rooting for you, because it doesn’t seem like things are getting better any time soon, and in all seriousness, I think everyone needs a break from the collective suffering of the last few months.

For me (and undoubtedly for many others if the hundreds of makeup looks and styling videos are anything to go by), Euphoria’s effect on the world of fashion and beauty is unprecedented. I really can’t recall a TV show in living memory that has had as much of an impact on the way young people dress. I mean, this might partially be because the style of the characters already kind of caters to and draws from the target audience but also, aside from Blair Waldorf did anybody really give THAT much of a fuck about what anybody in Gossip Girl wore?

The draw of the styling on Euphoria is that it has something for everyone. The style of each of the main girls, Rue, Kat, Maddy, Jules and Cassie, all of whom I’ve attempted (emphasis on attempted!) to base (emphasis on base!) outfits around, is varied and distinctive but still so current and realistic at the same time. It’s also consistent; even if you don’t own the specific pieces worn by any of them, similar shapes and details reoccur enough in different looks throughout the series that it’s not hard to create an outfit which matches your favourite character’s overall vibe without buying anything new. That’s kinda what I have attempted to do here and without further ado, I’m gonna get on with it! First up:

Jules (Played by Hunter Schafer)

When it comes to whose style is the most experimental, Jules is the obvious answer. A lot of her outfits are what I imagine a cartoonist in the near-distant future will envision their cool girl protagonist wearing. Whilst her ensembles are generally whimsical and girly for the most part, there’s usually a few slightly punk-ish finishing touches thrown in there too be it through chunky shoes or bold makeup or that incredible mesh trench coat she wears in the series finale with the trans symbol on the back which, honestly, deserves a moment of silence. 

There are definitely nods to current fashion trends sprinkled throughout her wardrobe too. I'm not going to lie, despite someone at work seemingly thinking it was an insult to tell me I look like someone who does (I still don’t know but this person has a Rick and Morty keyring so I don’t give it too much weight), I’ve never watched any anime. BUT, that being said, given the abundance of anime screenshots posted by all these aesthetic oriented Instagram and Tumblr moodboard accounts, I have a vague idea of what some of the more iconic characters look like and a lot of Jules’ looks seem to be very much modelled after or at least inspired by them. In a way, I see a lot of her looks as a blend between modern “e-girl”, Y2K skater chick (yes, I’m thinking early Avril Lavigne), and 2013 Tumblr “hipster” a la 2014 Joanna Kutcha and Charlie Barker, and though on paper that sounds like a nightmare combination, it works. I know-if that sentence were a Depop description I would’ve just gained 30 followers.

When it comes to my own interpretation of Jules’ style, it’s definitely something I like to channel when I’m putting together a proper OUTFIT outfit. Meaning an outfit I actually put effort into and thus will most likely want to get a good photo in, lol. The way her character dresses is almost quite Christopher Kane in that it’s fresh and unusual but still understated enough that I wouldn’t walk into a room wearing any of these feeling like I’m doing a Rick Owens runway.

I’m not TOO far out of my comfort zone but still at the same time, I’d be trying something new and maybe a little bit more zany than I'm used to. As for noting where any of these pieces are from, only a few have been bought in the last 6 months, but from left to right clockwise I have marked out those that have in case they’re still available (though be wary of the fact that it seems a lot of online clothes stores are still forcing warehouse employees to work in close confines at the moment and so perhaps aren’t operating the most ethically):

Kat (Played by Barbie Ferreira) 

Eurgh, Kat. 

I LOVE THIS BITCH.

If I had to choose my favourite character in the show, it would be a very close toss-up between her and Rue, and though I think Rue might just about nab the top spot for her relatability factor, Kat is the girl I want to be or wish that I had been when I was at school. I mean, there’s definitely an argument to be made in that a lot of what she’s doing with her cam work could be seen as a means of validation (Sam Levinson has basically said everyone on the show has some kind of an unhealthy coping mechanism and I would guess due to the circumstances in which her cam girl career was borne and the fact she’s underage, this would be hers) but I do think in other ways we really see Kat reclaim her power and recognise herself for the smart, capable, gorgeous woman that she is. Honestly, the definition of divine feminine energy, and I would completely let Barbie Ferreira/basically Kat if she was also actually 23 dominate me.

Plus! Her! Style! Is! The! Bomb! Definitely the easiest character to base looks around because if I’m totally honest Kat’s energy is pretty much just what I want to emulate in every day life. 

It’s either pieces that are typically feminine, cutesy, and even slightly preppy at times drenched in everything grunge OR vice versa where you have something semi-gothic and then add a colourful, more playful touch in there that harks back to the beginning of the series before Kat had began to explore her identity and sexuality and dressed slightly more Forever 21.

I’d say, not yet with my whole chest, that on a good day the outfits I put together when making an effort aren’t too far off something Kat would wear, minus the more overtly BDSM touches; if wearing a ring choker in London is enough to get me a creepy comment from a gross middle aged shopkeeper (because I apparently forfeited my right not to be perved on when I decided to buy a bottle of Oasis summer fruits), then you can only imagine the kind of looks wearing a full-on harness would get in my conservative OAP dominated hometown. Not the most doable right now, especially considering the only time I get out is to work and to go for a run. The chafing I could deal with but the horrified glares of pensioners whose M&S prawn mayo sandwiches I’ve ruined by simply being in their eyesight not so much.

Maddy (Played by Alexa Demie)

Not gonna lie, I was kind of scared to do Maddy. I’m scared to be posting this, lol! Alexa Demie has played this character for a single season and she’s already one of the most iconic women to grace our screens in years. This is a huge undertaking and I don’t have the bank balance or the body confidence (lmao) to raid IAmGia. 

And this is where I want to stress: THESE ARE NOT OUTFIT RECREATIONS. THESE ARE INSPIRED BY. I HAVE ADDED ELEMENTS OF MY OWN STYLE INTO THEM. PLEASE DON’T DRAG ME. I KNOW, I’M NOT ALEXA DEMIE. I WOULD NEVER ASSUME TO BE ALEXA DEMIE. I’M NOT ABOUT TO TAKE THE LORD’S NAME IN VAIN LIKE THAT. So now we’ve got that out the way (wipes bead of sweat off forehead), let’s continue. 

Everything about Maddy Perez is extra. She has very much been established as a centre of attention character, and her outfits are a key part of that. They’re daring, they’re hyper-feminine, and they are always glamorous. We’re told that she competed in beauty pageants when she was younger and it’s clear that level of excess and coordination and glitz and all-round-boujeeness wormed its way into her DNA during that time. Even the “depression” outfit she wears to school following Nate becoming violent at the fair is costume-like, a 2019 Bratz doll Off-White street style collaboration.

Do you know how HARD I had to try to be HOT!? For these photos. Alexa Demie is one of those blessed women who doesn’t have to try at all, and that translates into the character completely. At any given moment, Maddy could add or remove one item or clothing and be let straight into the VIP section of a club, and that, honestly, is inspiring to us all in these dark times. 

One thing I tried to keep in mind is that she always looks polished and coordinated, I.E the kind of look I would prepare for a night out is something Maddy would wear on an average day. Co-ords and delicate prints seem to be more subtle wardrobe staples along with mesh and PVC and glitter and feathers and fur and basically anything that toes the line between expensive looking and tacky. Yes, I am aware we may toe different sides of that line but please let me stay delusional and believe that’s not the case for 5 minutes. Much appreciated xoxo

Rue (Played by Zendaya Coleman)

I have a complicated relationship with Rue as a character. When I started season 1 of Euphoria, I was like “Oh my god, this girl is the worst. Jesus, she’s so negative and draining and willingly self-destructive and-”

Then, oh my god is this what it’s like to live with me!?

I will say, to my own credit, that I don’t think I've ever been quite as hard to deal with as Rue (a lot less smashing stuff up and a lot more moping), and to HER credit, by the end of the season we come to realise she’s been through a fucking lot and so it makes sense, but wow. I don’t think I have ever seen a teen show handle drug abuse and mental illness in such a brutal way. It’s quite a talent to be able to show a character cause so much pain to those closest to them and yet do so through a sympathetic lens. And issues aside, whether it’s her occasional social awkwardness or her relationship with her family or watching bloody Love Island (still quite surreal to see Zendaya Coleman witnessing the Amy/Curtis drama unfold), Rue is just my favourite character to follow. 

Her style, though. AH. The thing is, I can hardly drag it, because it’s pretty much what I wear when I’m moping about the house-or just any time I can get away with it to be honest-to a T. I want to stay true to character, but that being said, creating a “Seth Rogen”-esque outfit that’s worth posting on here is difficult. So, with the same kind of artistic license that had me wearing berets whilst cosplaying Maddy Perez, here is the best I could do:

I know, I know, it’s probably too much colour and jewellery for Rue but this is as toned down as I could do and I tried to stick with the key silhouettes we see from her throughout the season; I mean, I can’t see her wearing leopard print but the structure of the coat in outfit 1 is very similar to the one seen in Shook Ones pt.II. I think the bottom line when it comes to her character is keeping things effortless and not overly-feminine; you want to mix street style, athleisure and your dad’s wardrobe favourites like your life depends on it. Plus messy hair and smudged makeup, both of which I’ve already got down according to the completely inappropriate number of customers who’ve asked if I'm tired at work so thanks for that guys, and glitter tears. Lots and lots of glitter tears.

Cassie (Played by Sydney Sweeney)

Style-wise, Cassie is a hard one. When putting outfits for her character together, I found myself gravitating towards a direction that’s probably a bit too bohemian for her character, under the guidance of loose terms like “girl-next-door”, “floaty”, “delicate”, you get the idea. She definitely feels the least fully-realised in terms of all the main girls and I think it’s fair to say she’s probably got a bit of self-discovery to do. Most of her storylines in the season are dictated by her relationships to other people: McKay, Maddy, Lexie, her parents and so on. 

Nevertheless, I tried to stick to the airier, more traditionally “pretty” pieces whilst still channelling the confidence and ease with which Cassie pulls them off. Sydney Sweeney has the most incredible figure and I feel like whilst the clothes the on-set stylists put her in flatter that and don’t hide anything, they’re still the focus. It doesn’t feel like there’s anything more inherently sexual about her character than any of the other main female characters despite the way the men within the narrative view her, and I think it’s a testament to the the wardrobe department that to me she still gives off big modern Disney princess energy and a certain innocence even whilst we hear her being continuously sexualised by her male peers. 

If anything, Cassie probably dresses the most like an actual teenage girl, and her style, whilst less distinctive than the other girls, still does a good job of capturing the youth and romanticism of her character. 

The colour palette of her wardrobe tends to be quite neutral, with a couple of pastels thrown in there, and if there are any details, they’re usually quite dainty. Similarly, Cassie is probably the least experimental when it comes to her makeup; we don’t really see her wearing the bold eyeshadows or liners or gems like the other girls at any point.

SO, I guess that’s it for my Euphoria lookbook! As always, let me know what you think (nicely pls, my ego is fragile lol) and I’d love to hear your opinions on the show too! I really haven’t got this excited over a new TV show in ages and I just think that it does everything so excellently-from the writing to the cinematography to the soundtrack, you can tell each element is so carefully and purposefully constructed. It immerses you into the dramatic highs and lows of being a teenager in a way I haven’t seen since UK Skins and I never thought I’d watch a show which held a candle to that. 

In terms of what I’m doing next, I’ve got a very delayed fashion week masterpost in the works as well as something to fill the Met Gala shaped hole in our lives, which I hope to get up over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, if you read to the end, THANK YOU! And I hope you’re staying safe and AT HOME where possible. I know this self-isolation feels never-ending and if I’m honest, it is having a hugely negative effect on my mental health, but NHS staff are doing their very best with the shitty recourses they have and whilst it seems that our government have thrown workers under the bus once again, we can all do our bit to combat that by slowing the spread of the virus. Also thank you to anybody who’s out working now in such a scary and uncertain time! I work at a grocery store and can say from experience that the best way to show this thanks is just through kindness and following employee’s instructions without giving them grief for it. Everyone’s scared right now and the best we can do is pull together and look out for each other, as difficult as that might seem at times.
